I spent the last three days working on the boat at Shotley and (being the organised soul that I'm not) had a chance to sample the food locally.
Basically, we won't be going to the Shipwreck any more. The food is distinctly average - I fancied a burger, £7.95 I think. The burger itself was nothing special, the bread roll was of the type that usually has 'value' or 'long life' on the wrapper and the chips were limp and tepid, and a tiny tub of coleslaw salad that was freezing. Just not very inspiring....
Then we went to the Bristol Arms. What a difference. The Cod and Chips was outstanding - super crispy chips, lovely thick pieces of fish with just the right amount of batter on it. Washed down with a great pint too.
It's a shame really. I like Shotley as a cruising base and the staff are always helpful, but I miss having good food on site. The Shipwreck has potential to work well, a great location and view of the harbour. For now, the Bristol Arms gets my vote and trade.
