Hi,

Thinking of going to the folly Inn - River Medina, just working out tides for this sunday. Draft Of 2.2m, (incl 0.2m extra) I believe the mooring's have a CD of 1.1m.

It's Neaps this weekend, from looking at the tide graph, i will be ok going in anytime this weekend - plan to go in at just after low water on sunday 1 pm ish, of which there should be 1.7 as it's a neap this sunday, so 1.7 + 1.1 = 2.8 meters min.

Am i correct?

I have my chart, tide tables and tide graph.

Sorry - Iam still learning /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Looks about right. Pressure's quite high, which could reduce the depth a bit more.

Send a crew member up to the pulpit and if s/he suddenly gets thrown forward into the water, you'll know you have run aground /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Suggest using said crew member to check depth using the new spinnaker pole - that must be around the 3 metre mark surely?

Simon, chart a depth a bit outside the Folly area, and make a prediction. If the prediction is good, then you can have confidence to go in a bit closer.

Dont have the pole yet, next weeked, cant wait.
Isnt there mooring opposite the folly?
Just looking in the almanac, page 273 or can you moor up right outside the folly?

Your arithmetic is correct so if you have read the tide table and the charted depth correctly and you'll be OK.
The barometric pressure is 1015mb at the moment so is not sigificantly different to the pressure (1013mb) on which the tide tables are based.

Hi vic,

Thanks for your help, you have helped me out a few times now - really appreciate it.

Didnt know tide tables are based on 1013mb.

Thanks again.

Does anyone know if i can moor up right outside the pub?

As has been said, it looks about right. If you are going in just after low water, you know it is only going to get better, so just go in slowly. Mooring right outside is often reserved but plenty of room opposite and you can get the launch across.

You can either moor on the folly pontoon which is connected to the land but you will have to book. It's probably already full. Folly harbour number is 07887725922. Or you can turn up and moor in the middle of the medina. More water there.

You can but you'll have to be there pretty sharpish - everytime I've been (er, sorry, both times I've been!) in the sunshine its been like the M25 on a Friday afternoon with people scrapping to get on the direct access pontoons.

But dont forget, the outer pontoons have a taxi that runs back and forth to the pub.

woody if you are going to the folly, I have just checked chart and tides. The pontoons on the other side of the river from the inn are approx 1m, and low tide at cowes is 1.92m so there is plenty of water. However, dont go on the west side of the pontoons as it can get a bit shallow there.

It's easy, and this works everywhere not just the folly. When you have ordered your initial drinks you offer the person serving you a drink. Next time you order make sure you get the same person and offer them a drink again. From then on you could be five rows back but they will see you and as long as you are buying them a drink you will get served.

They will remember your face and next time you go there you will get the same good service. carry on offering and you will get the good service.
