Folly Inn, IOW

How things change..

Last time i went to the Folly Uffa Fox s brother in law ran it.

We used to camp in the field alongside. well actually there wasnt even a hedge.

There was a guy who lived in a Ford V8 pilot, might have been the barman, in the same field.

Beer was about 7p a pint, difficult to say as it was pre decimal..

And they did food as well.. Crisps or Nuts.

Can t have changed much..

As an alternative try Island Harbour 1/2 mile further up - lovely marina, with decent restaurant and bar - The Breeze. No problem with depth 2 hours either side of low water assuming you don't draw much more than 1m. Stay mid river until you reach the green conical buoy opposite the entrance to the lock and pontoon trot, then turn sharp 90 degrees left into the lock. If you call the HM on Ch 80 he will give a you notice of when you can have a green light. Cut the corner into the lock at your peril.

If you go in near HW there is free flow so no need to stop. Have ropes ready, but they do pass over shore lines as you enter the lock. Beware that the wind curls over the building and blows back the way it came towards the building, so you think you are going to port and end up pushed to stbd.

Thanks for the replies. The other thing that puts us off the Folly is we've just been told the beer's Green King :disgust: and that's even worse than Youngs :)

Island Harbour sounds interesting. Just been having a read up on it. I'll consult with the boss when she surfaces

Best thing to do this weekend is avoid Cowes, Friday night a run down to Yarmouth would be good, it won;t be chockers due to RTI, walk to the Red Lion at Freshwater and complete the loop walking back, esp as we're on mid summer. Get up at 5am and go sit on the beach to watch the boats go by.

Saturday - eat on board, steer clear of Cowes, I suspect on Saturday this weekend Yarmouth will be a train crash as lots of boat will retire from the race without getting round the first corner.

It was the isle wight festival weekend last weekend when it seems the poster on scuttlebutt went. I'm guessing the folly was catering for the masses as it was very busy friday, saturday and sunday during lunch time.

We ate in the folly about 6 weeks ago and the food was as good as ever.

I have used the place for years, last time 5 weeks back and never had a bad meal while Andy and Cheryl are running it. However I certainly would not have ventured near the place while the IOW Festi was on though. It must have been like a Zoo.
Anyway Wavey is now in Lymington, so has plenty choice for what is turning out to be a lovely evening. Please raise a glass to us who are landlubbing this evening.
Enjoy your trip back.

Was there sat lunchtime and it was very quiet inside. Quite a few outside though due to weather. Food was fine.

We did raise a glass. Quite a few in fact :) Decent meal in the Old Ship to accompany the HSBs. Bought some fresh crab which we had when we got back to Shamrock. All in all a great couple of days. Weather couldn't have been better. Moving the boat to the Solent was the best move we've made, especially as SWMBO is loving it.

Back to work today. Oh well, it pays the bills.

I like east Cowes and the Lifeboat pub. We were forced over there a few years back when the Queen was visiting and West Cowes had no space. Been lots since but very nearly got caught out there a while back, not paying sufficient attention when the tide was moving at a hell of a rate. Seen plenty of others come to grief. I was saved by twin engines and a powerful bow thruster. Wise to plan carefully!
