Following Dylans "Peking" thread

Peking was laid up on the Medway and used by Shaftsbury homes after being renamed Arethusa. She reverted to Peking when taken to NYC.

One thing that struck me, seeing all these 'built...sunk/burned out/stranded' dates, was how short lived most of these big ships were. Did they make enough during their short lives to justfy the huge cost of building them?

I suppose it's still like that for boats that go racing down into the Southern Ocean - the Open 60s and Volvo 70s fall apart too.

Many times their worth - no fuel costs :)
Of P-clippers Passat and Pommern are still with us, standing, Padua is still sailing as Крузенштерн. Been on each, worth to do a trip.

Bristol Channel pilot cutters cost around 300 pounds to build. A pilot could earn 60 pounds for pilotting one ship into port.

Pilots earn a lot less than 20% of the cost of a pilot cutter these days (either the current day motorized one, or a real sailing one!)

...not to mention how many were 'rammed by a steamer!
