Just got off the phone to Folleux capitainerie to enquire about leaving our dinghy in the dinghy dock while we return home for a couple of weeks, the first response was ‘you can but it, or at least the engine, might be stolen’. Now of course things might get stolen from anywhere, but the fact this was the first thought of the capitainerie was a bit disconcerting.

Is anyone familiar with whether there is a particularly big theft problem up at Folleux? Is that the case across the Villaine/Morbihan/France?

If so, that makes me even wonder whether we are doing the right thing - losing an inflatable or outboard would p me off, but having the mothership (which will be on one of the most distant swinging moorings) trashed would really spoil my day.

I was based at Folleux for 8 years, leaving in 2023, and never had or heard of any thefts. Perhaps you could leave your dinghy in one of the boatyards. Multi-Nautique on the south bank are good. The yard is locked overnight and I think has CCTV.
Alternatively, you could leave your dinghy with your boat and use one of the green rowing boats provided by the marina to to from/to your boat.

That’s reassuring - thanks Steve - the woman we spoke to was probably just being a bit overprotective of her new clients!

What are the green boats like to row - I think we will be about 1/2 a mile from the capitainerie and the woman on the phone sucked her teeth when I proposed that. Having been on the Dart for the past few years I can’t imagine the Vilaine is going to be too daunting in decent weather?

Yeah - that should work mostly - but we’ll need a taxi for 6.30am for the 7.21 train on this our first arrival. We can work round it - 6.30 might be optimistic for a rural one man taxi band anyway, so probably get a room in Redon - and normally we’ll have the car. It was the prominence given to security that caused me to sit up.

I’ll take the lie of the land when we get up there, but as we have the option of free winter berthing at one of the other CdePdeM ports, or any of the Lorient one for the next couple of years due to the lock closing for upgrades, we might go for that anyway to push the concern down the tracks a way. We’ll mostly be onboard and cruising during the summer.

No problem rowing as very little current, unless there's been heavy rainfall upstream. It can be a problem getting a row boat as they can all end up on one side. We once went for a meal at the bar next to the capitainerie and all the rowing boats disappeared from that side while we were eating. Lucky a couple reappeared by the time we were ready to leave.
We used a taxi from the bar/tabac in Beganne (Le Cadran Solaire) to take us to Redon station. He picked us up from the capitainerie, it's cheaper than from the south bank. The marina office booked it for us.
We were on a port a sec contract for most of our time there. Boat was in the yard when we were away. The contract included 6 lift in/outs and passport escale with free berthing the first 2 nights at most marinas.

I use the green rowboats and leave my dinghy on the deck (as you probably saw), and lock the outboard away in a locker.

We left our 4 x 4 and 4 wheel trailer at Folleaux whilst cruising the Villane, the Islands and Morbihan for three weeks.
Never had a worry about thieving but maybe times are changing there.

Ironically on our return we left the trailer at our home port for 1 week.
All four very expensive brand new high load wheels and tyres were nicked in full view of the security cameras and 20 feet from the night watchman's office.
