Hi. I'm new to this Forum but am very impressed by the information everyone is happy to share. I am in the process of buying a Folkboat from Weymouth and need a trailer for her. Can anyone recommend a source for good second hand trailers. Her details are laid out below.

LOA 25' 10"
LWL 19' 10"
Beam 7' 2"
Draft 4' 0"
Displacement 4740 lbs.
Ballast 2750

I have a metal cradle for her already so really just need a flat bed trailer or chassis to place the cradle on.

I live in Taunton, Somerset, and hope to have the yacht based at Topsham (Near Exeter).

Appreciate any advice.

try the trailer centre in Bridgewater, on the right hand side of the dual carriageway as you leave the town centre and head for the M5. I think it might be called Highbridge Trailers. Failing that Honeyfield Trailers in Bristol (Ashton Gate, just up the road from the city ground) should be able to help.

Thanks very much for this. I'll try them out.
I don't suppose you can recommend any boat yards to store her over winter. We currently have a wayfarer dingy at Dartmouth so somewhere around there would be ideal.

If you just need temporary transport I can recommend West Country Transport, Mark Davies, 01566 785651. He brought our Folkboat from Gweek Quay to Bangor Northern Ireland, was helpful, reasonably priced and did not put a mark on it!

Folboat Insurance

Thank you to Nordic & Tritonofnor for your recent replies to my request re: Transport advice for my Folkboat. I have, however decided now, to sail her round to Exmouth from Weymouth as I have found an ideal place to pull her out of the water for winter work.

I wonder if Nordic or anyone else can help with another important point, ie insurance for the boat. Is there any company that specialises in Folkboats or similar boats of this type.

Would greatly appreciate any advice.

Regards

Re: Folboat Insurance

Firstly, I would recommend you join the Folkboat Association, contact Peter Ament at folkboatuk2@aol.com. A wealth of information is available from members via a (somewhat slow) folkboat forum and a comprehensive member list of names, boats and home ports - you can be sure somebody has fixed a folkboat problem before you. There are only a few Folkboats up here, but the recent Irish Sea FB Association saw 9 boats racing in Carlingford Lough, from Ireland N & S and the Menai Straits. The South Coast has most, "British": wooden and GRP; traditional Nordic and new GRP Nordics.

Secondly insurance is a shop-around thing, but we have had our 42 year old Swedish built wooden Nordic with Bishop Skinner at what I regard as a reasonable premium for comprehensive cover, plus extra for racing insurance for mast spars sails and rigging. We had a current survey as part of our purchase and I would expect any insurance company will need a survey for insurance. A previous owner of our FB is Chairman of a mutual insurance company limited to 500 members and would be worth contacting "The East Coast Mutual Yacht Insurance Association Ltd" Sec: Tony Saunders tel. 01983 883443. They do not provide racing cover for class racing, but do include an additional racing risks policy requirement on their proposal form.

Good luck with your renovations and happy and safe sailing
