Folkboat engine

As i'm sure you are all aware from my constant questions that i'm buliding/restoring an old FB. To that end an anyone recommend an engine that is used in the (inboard). It seems as though it's the Yanmar1GM10, but is there another option?

Beta 10 maybe?

A lot of people swear by the Beta, being twin cylinder it's smoother running than the single cylinder Yanmar which does dance around somewhat at tickover. There's not a lot of difference in size.

Through choice I would go for a Beta if you are buying new. Very happy with my Yanmar, which I bought before the Beta was available. Latter is almost the same size, 2 cyls, Freshwater cooled and has wider range of choice on things like sump and mounts.

If you're interested in saving weight - for racing your Folkboat - then a modern Dolphin petrol engine may be worth considering. www.dolphinengines.co.uk They appear to be a considerable improvement over the original Dolphin engines, having an instant astern gearbox. My 37ft yacht, Joliette, was fitted with a 7 hp petrol engine when launched in 1950 so I did consider a Dolphin a few years ago, but opted for a Yanmar 30GMF as I wanted the power for cruising. A diesel is a big lump of ballast that you can't move about and you may need to add even more weight forward so that she continues to sit on her waterline.

Hi woolyhatter I to have a folkboat which I maintain upgrade restore. 2 years ago we fitted a nani 10. this was done after much consideration of the options. Esentialy this is a twin it is freshwater cooled and it fits on the footprint of a 1GM. The importers of Nani based in Norfolk were very helpfull throughout. Good luck

Think the Nanni and Beta are both Kubota based, so large scale production for industrial use and hence lower price of basic spares ( so I'm told ). Worth considering a long shaft outboard to bolt onto your transom. Try it for a year to get you sailing and you can always sell it on if you want to do the inboard.

the gm10 is a gud engine and would fit straight in to your mountings[a major consideration]!
although as is said the nani 10 would also fit i would go 4 that as its a twin!
