Folding bike for the boat - recommendations?

I think the best budget option is the cheapest brompton you can find that is still usable.
take care of it and sell it on for the same price that you paid, or more.

We have 2 and are still very happy with them.

Well, the forum seems to go for Brompton, but I bought a second hand Strida a few years ago and have found it superb for long distance cruising. In St Lucia I had a daily early morning ride to Gros Islet and every day a Rasta would shout "Love de bike man". The bike is certainly very eye-catching, the rider not. Last year I rode from Lochboisdale to the Coop (about 3.5 miles I think) and then back into a gale and heavy rain with a rucksack of supplies and a carrier bag on each bar. Not exactly fun but much much better than walking. A great piece of kit.

Another vote for the Strida. Mine has been living in the rope locker with some damp and salty kit for about 15 years now and has needed hardly any maintenance (I only ever pump the tyres up). There's no rust, it works well and still looks quite shiny. Doesn't fold up as small as a Brompton but is much lighter. It only has a single gear so good for a run to the shops rather than extended touring.

We have done so many miles on our Bromptons we wore the tyres out

Yesterday I purchased a second hand Brompton, quite old but in excellent condition. Should be very useful as easily stowed in boot and boat.
Thanks to all for all the info that helped to guide my decision.
