What's the thinking on foils? I note that only one foiling boat is in the top 6 in the Vendee Globe at present.
The vendee is a race around the whole world. So far what we have is a race from the west coast of France to the Azores. In November. If you were given an almost unlimited budget to design an IMOCA to win a race to the Azores in November it would look very different to the boats that have resulted from an almost unlimited budget for a RTW race, but closer to the older IMOCAs. And that Azores boat would probably be a long way ahead now.
But that Azores boat would very quickly be reeled in when the fleet gets into the downwind conditions to come. The Hugo Boss team have been very open in saying that their design studies showed that over the RTW course it basically doesn't matter how slow you are upwind as long as you're the fastest boat in the fleet downwind. For something that's supposedly pretty pants upwind, I think he'll be fairly happy with where he is now....

Sam Davies is doing well - currently in 8th and only 27 miles being leader Alex Thomson. That lead could be under threat by Le Cam come the next update whereas the other foilers are further west than Alex. Fascinating to follow.

Sam is in with a decent shout. She has experience in this event, having narrowly missed out on a podium finish in the 2008-9 event. She has a boat which has been adapted to foils.

I'm just a bit concerned that she may be a Pompey fan.
