It allows music from another source - like an iPod or similar - to be played through a radio. No danger in removing it

Do you have the associated video player and LCD screen?If not then buy a modern TV with DVD player and sell the Modulator

Plug it into your phone, iPad, or laptop, and play music through the boat's FM radio.

Ah, I see now. May have a think about keeping it, though I was considering getting a new FM radio with a usb port to play music through.

It is a FM-transmitter, audio in, and then it creates an FM-signal for your radio. Tune your radio to it and listen.
