Flywheel removal

If they fit maybe however it has not been my experience that the gear pullers will fit.
There should be 2 or usually 3 threaded holes in the flywheel onto which one bolts a puller.
Tighten the puller one turn past finger tight then give the load bolt a sharp tap with a hammer and the flywheel should jump off provided you loosened the retaining bolt.
Do not try to pull the flywheel off using the puller - use the tighten and tap method.
A puller can be made out of a piece of steel plate suitably drilled and a nut and bolt for loading.

Hi

Thanks for the reply's, unfortunately there are no threaded holes, just 2 largish holes on opposite sides where you can see the magno etc..

The engine is 30 years+ old, there is no spark and the spark plug lead is broken so want to change it out, clean the electrics and see if that works.

Probably not they may well distort the flywheel. But may depend on the motor .......... what is it?

You will probably need a harmonic balancer puller which bolts onto the Flywheel with high tensile bolts

That is what the three threaded holes are for in the picture below of mine.( Evinrude)

With a very small one the method that is used for Seagulls may work.
That is to slacken the nut, but don't remove
Get an assistant to hold the motor off the floor by gripping the rim of the flywheel.
Whack the nut with a decent sized hammer cushioned with a bit of hardwood or even a bit of copper or brass.

Watch out for the key as you take it off.

When refitting ensure the key is fitted properly and tighten the nut to the correct torque

If you use a three legged puller do as Cliff said earlier........Tighten it up, but don't force it. Give the centre pin a sharp tap with a lump hammer and the shock should release it. Don't forget to loosen the flywheel nut first! Also make sure that you don't damage the thread on the shaft when you use the puller otherwise you'll not be able to get the flywheel nut on when you put it back together.

You are right. I did not notice that it was threaded. Dark corner of the garage and I just held the camera at arms length.

Sorry the manuals are difficult to read in the new P'bucket. If you get the URLs and open each directly you can get them up fulltime. Otherwise ask and I'll post the links to each page.

Sorry, it is a 3.9. it is similar - i'll try and post a pic - thanks for the manuals, I've been looking for over a year for them !

Cheers
