Flying the ECF pennant.

Amsterdam Marina.....
BTW highly unimpressed with this marina. Have I caught it on a bad day?

I quite liked it! Nice bathrooms & seemed secure. Very 'Big city' Dutch attitude of money first then talk. Was happy to leave the boat there for almost a week whilst off exploring. Convenient for the free ferry to Central Station.

Preferred it to Ijmuiden.

Probably back there on Friday for weekend.

What happened to those sunny Canary Islands

So pleased to hear about the Butley Oyster... Used to drive out to it a few times a year, then we heard it had closed... Will get out there again soon now it's open again!

Yes, place has been transformed, sympathetically in my opinion. Although one could never top the days of Vera and the barrels of ale behind the bar. Check out Oysters Website.

My contribution !! OK I know you can hardly see the anchored boat let alone the pennant, but it was flying for the entire trip. Photo taken from the terrace of a yacht club three weeks ago. Typical East Coast scenery ?

Hi Dan,

Which marina in Amsterdam are you referring to?

Peter.
The new Amsterdam Marina at NSDM Werf, West of town. A bit better once I got to know the place but 1at impressions not good.
1/ no signage, apart from " report to harbourmaster", but where is he, she, or office? No reply by phone and no channel 31 on Britisher vhf.
2/ claims no vacant berths though lots of apparent empty one. So moor to wave break. A bit exposed and uncomfortable.
3/ no water or electricity available. Harbour master says it is, but it isn"t, can't leave the office so I can demonstrate.
4/ further to item 1, no signs to indicate where showers or toilets are, just poke about until you find them. (They are excellent when you do find them).
5/ Not the marina's fault but there are 4 Royal Naval Cadet patrol boats in, drunken skinny dipping @ 4am!
Now I understand the layout it's better, but not very welcoming at 1st.

I emailed Amsterdam the day before (from Ijmuiden) phoned on the day, as no answer on #31, allocated a berth. Electricity on berth. Went to office to be told where showers were. Very welcoming! Just personal experience I guess.

I phoned from Haarlem the day before, but was told, no need to book, loads of space. I guess I just caught the wrong part time harbour mistress on a bad day.

I've been berthed at Amsterdam Marina (NSDM Werf) for 3 seasons. I really like it (apart from the airborn dirt from the shipyard).

1) From my experience very few Dutch people use the VHF and use the mobile instead which works well.

2) There's nearly always a berth available - the exception being the big HISWA event which isn't happening at Amsterdam Marina this year (now moved to Lelystad which is good news for those berth-holders who had to move for the show).

3) Electricity for visitors is available on the various pylons on the pontoon. Berth-holders have their own locked supply which you may have tried to use (as I did as a visitor). Water is available from various locations along the pontoons - they look the same as the berth-holders electric supply points (engraved tap on the lid). You have to use the hose which is found on the root of the pontoon. Hoselock type fittings do not work.

4) Yes agree, nothing obvious. But the ablutions are very good - unless despoiled by visitors.

5) You were young once ( I hope!)

Of course you can arrive when a member of staff is having a 'bad day' but for me (as a berth-holder) they are very helpful and accommodating.

However, I do think if you are new to Amsterdam and just passing through you should consider berthing at Sixhaven - it's a great experience.
