This weekend I attended the Traditional boat festival at Peel in the IOM.

It started well with a passage through the Swellies in the dark, to say it needed some concentration would be an understatement...... it's bloody dark in there with just a couple of marks to lead the way.Tired on the return journey was even worse...... but I have now done it and lived to tell the tale.

Arrived at peel and thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, it was great to see the old boats and watch them sailing back and forth on the Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

Little Ship was booked in and received all the hospitality she deserves as a traditional boat, this included breakfast being delivered to the boat free of charge by the organisers.

For those that dont know, the west side of the IOM is probably the best place in the UK to see basking sharks and I saw 3 of them going to Peel and one leaving.

Anyway..... flying fish !

Returning to Wales yesterday I had just passed through Calf Sound when the Radio sprang into life...

Little Ship this is Freebird.... have you just come through Calf Sound.

My first thoughts were somebody wanted to know what the water was like.Look at the overfalls in the background of the picture

I replied to say that it was and then there was no other reply so I started to look around.

I then saw this charging towards me

At first I thought Pirates, well come on I was in the IOM. Then I remembered who had a boat called Freebird, so I slowed down so that it could catch up ( I know some will find it difficult to believe that LS is faster than another boat :) )

We had a quick conversation re I have been over here for 4 days why didnt you call and to make amends, Drewtwos threw two fish on the back deck of Little Ship. Major he could teach you a thing or two about fishing :)

Drewtwos now holds the unofficial CoM FDTT that's the Calf of Man Fish Distance Throwing Tital....... personally I hold the one for catching the Flying Fish!

All that water and I get spotted :)

See you next weekend Drew..........

Tom

PS The fish are now in the freezer ;)

dam, have a lovely video of the IOM old gaffers from last year, and various boating IOM views, but I have spent hours, and hours, even getting (well I thought it was) expert advice, only to not manage well, anything, I can use. Panasonic camera anyone want one, their video suite is **** Movie maker is great. Also have some movies of Littleship making waves !!

Sounds like Little Ship is getting a work-out this season, getting a few miles under the belt now.

Did you manage to take any pics. of the traditional boats gathering Tom?

I would like to know more about these overfalls. Are they what we call tidal bores? New water coming in over the old ebbing water? Would you run back out there and take some pictures as you are going Through/Over the falls?:D :D

Sounds like a lovely trip. I saw an IBS with three peeps motoring in the marina. Was that you? I have spycams everywhere!;)

Bernie

'Tidal bores'

Mostly seen on PBO and Scuttlebutt!
An regularly in the Lounge:rolleyes:

See, what appens is

Due to a rather large range of tide in the UK
Particularly in the Irish sea (our bit) there is lots of toing and froing of water

Around headlands and estuarys etc with an uneven sea bed the phenonemon
of 'overfalls' is created

Quite predictical are these bits of , sometimes dangerous sea areas.
Marked on charts for all to see

Most nasty on Spring tides and worth avoiding like the Plague.

'Rip Tides and 'bores' are phrases used more often in North America.

The overfalls in our neck of the woods really can be quite alarming when Springs are combined with the wind against the tide.

In fairness to Tom
Guiding Little Ship through 'the Swellies' at night is proof of decent seamanship.

With a displacement vessel the timing has to be fairly accurate
It aint so bad with a 'quick boat' and we all know about Little Ship:D

It wasn't long ago
I was sat on L Ship on the pier at Menai Bridge (in daylight)

'We can go now Tom' says I
'Not on yer life' says Tom

'Look at the current' or words to that effect

Now then Tom
Hows about the 'wrong way round' in the dark?:D

Anyway
'Well Done That Man':)

Peel is a very pleasant harbour and the staff a very friendly and welcoming.... bit like the staff at the meeting last year? They even walk down to the dock side to take a line if asked to do so. Pity it's so far away on a slow boat :) What is an IBS boat, I can say it wasnt me as I was single handed!

Andie

I didn't take any photos of the meeting but friends did and if they turn up I may post a couple....... errm they were sail boats will it be safe to post them on here! :)

The olde worlde sail boats can be categorised as historically charming, and safely viewed as being from a quaint era, prior to the general availability of the modern day motor-boat and all the advantages that go with them :).
