Flybridge v's Aft Cabin - in damp climate

Re: Flybridge v\'s Aft Cabin - in damp climate

Thanks Michael, very good points. It is good to get an informed view from somebody who has actually eperienced these varying configurations.

Re: Flybridge v\'s Aft Cabin - in damp climate

A fine summary, although the full beam mid cabin boats also have to make some compromises, most notably that all the engine and fuel weight is shoved right up the back which can't make for the best hull dynamics, and the topsides are several feet higher which means a lot more windage.

Re: Flybridge v\'s Aft Cabin - in damp climate

I'm not sure the engine/fuel tank position changes all that much if at all, its just that the designers have found a way of incorporating the main cabin amidships in place of the more usual guest cabins. But what you are definitely right about is that in order to maintain headroom in the main cabin, the saloon floor has to be higher but whether this leads to an overall increase in the height of the boat, I dunno. Certainly the Manhattan 50 and the T50 both look top heavy but the Phantom 48 and Princess 54 seem to have normal proportions. I did notice that the headroom at the P48 lower helm was v poor so maybe the designers have pinched height there
Anyway, I think its a an excellent trend as most forward owners cabins are ridiculously small and its certainly a plus factor for Med boating as you wont hear the bow lines or anchor chain creaking or the splosh of waves on the bow when at anchor when you're asleep in a mid cabin.

That's not true actually; a flybridge boat has one extra deck to a sports boat with the fly being in addition to the saloon. I also disagree with your comment re using these boats in British waters. My boat is based on the south coast and this year all my boating trips scheduled many months in advance have been graced by splendid weather. Over the last 8 years I have only cancelled 2 for weather although I admit some others were touch and go.
