Fly fishing off a yacht

Why would you want to catch flies

Casting .. ?

You need to be able to Spey cast. The technique of being able to cast from under a tree itherwise yer line becomes attached to the rigging. Use a sinking line as the salt in the water will make it more buoyant itherwise you'll jist be flinging oot anither anchor ...

Och aye

Och, I can spey (or roll cast) ... I learnt to fly fish on Gala water and the Leader ... and it was a requisite skill there ;-)

Have fished from the tender drifting down wind with a double taper No 6 slow sinker on a 9 foot rod short casting using conventional wet flies and caught Mackerel and had great sport. Tried with dry flies but never got any takes and had trouble really keeping in touch with the fly. I am sure that you should be able to take Bass as well, thats what I was hoping for. I was to much of a wuss to try from the boat. The marina has some big Mullet and I have often thought that a small river rod light line and a dry fly would be good fun but there are to many obstacles to snag the line once the fish takes and runs.

one of my other addictions is fishing, specifically fly fishing. Never tried it off the boat yet, though I too have thought about having a go at the mullet in the marina. Will be doing a lot of it next week though, off the shore, for bass. And in November, in New Zealand, for trout.....now that is another story!

Bottom munching

I've often thought about going after the mullet in marinas, but, and this is a serious question, what about all the antifoul they must ingest when munching on the bottom of boats?

I would only fish for marina mullet for sport, not only is it the antifouling it's all the the other stuff that is discharged that should not be,if you get my drift!

The only reason I can think of for angling for mullet is trying to outwit the damned things. You certainly wouldn't want to eat one. I've tried. It's like carp, but with added mud flavour.

That's what I thought as well... but I saw that Hugh Fearnly whatshisname chomping in to one on the box the other day - some kind of mullet chowder I think. Mind you, anything that guy eats is usually off my list within seconds:D
