I already have a Raymarine seatalk converter which should take an NMEA HDG input. Has anyone tried connecting a low cost fluxgate compass to seatalk. The NASA unit seems to be considerably cheaper than using Raymarine. I see that magnetic heading sensor modules are quite cheap has anyone found an easy way to get an NMEA output from these.

The NASA compass outputs the HDG nmea 0183 sentence at 1Hz so should work with the Seatalk converter. The S1/S3 APs will work with hdg data over nmea or Seatalk if their own fluxgate compass is not connected.

I have an Airmar Gh2183 combined solid state compass and gps receiver which I hope to use with an spx30 AP. Raymarine say the spx30 is only designed to use their fluxgate compass but on the other hand have not stated that it categorically won't work if the hdg data is supplied over nmea or SealtalkNG. I will find out shortly!

I thought I would see if there was a cheaper solution. I see you can buy an electronic compass module for 99p. There are plenty of examples of people using them with a Pi. Anyone here got one working with a Pi to output NMEA yet. Just starting on Python but this is way beyond me at the moment.

I've briefly looked at this a while ago before other things more urgent popped up: http://blog.matrixmariner.com/arduino_compass

This will output RS232/USBserial NMEA HCHDG (or whatever you want it to really). The HMC6352 seems to be end of life, but has a successor in the HMC5883L (also dirt cheap).
