They are expensive, but I was quoted £1588 plus VAT from the agent in Poole for a twin enging system that will link to GPS and give me litres per Nm. There are lots of choices in their range and I think you are looking at a single engine unit and doubling it.
My calculation is based on living on board and using more fuel per annum than you. Thats why I was careful to say it's up to each one to decide if it's worth it.
Good luck with Irene!
Mike, my prices came from Floscan USA for direct sales online and were around 30% off the normal retail they said. The prices were listed for both a single engine or a twin engine setup and as you say linked to GPS, but the figures did come out at almost exactly double for two engines over one. What was noticeable was the big variation in cost for different engines or rather for different hp variations of the same basic engine, bigger hp increased the Floscan price markedly perhaps related to the flow capacity needing bigger sensors?
We will also be living on board full time. Our boat is currently out of the water in St Augustine FL but when we get there we will move south and be based initially out of Daytona Beach, and will spend 3-4 months cruising the Keys, Bahamas, Exumas etc. We are not sure if we will stay based in Florida longer term or if after say two years we might move north and base ourselves in southern Chesapeake to cruise there and points north. Chesapeake is such a fabulous cruising area and is also much cheaper in terms of berthing and insurance over Florida where 'named storm' insurance is an extra $800pa even with a sizable excess. Winters are better in Florida though!
Irene is looking like moving farther east now and not hitting land on Florida albeit being a Cat 4 offshore. Looks like it will brush past eastern Florida giving very strong winds but not the really bad stuff, then making landfall in the Carolinas as a Cat 3 hurricane which will be bad bad.
