Can anyone advise whether or not it is safe to go out when a river is very high and
fast flowing? As complete novices we have had several confliscting views, but it does look a bit scary as it is very fast flowing and there is lots of debris floating past!!

It depends on your boat's capabilities. If you are Novices and unhappy about your own abilities then don't do it, wait until you are more confident.

Before we all jump to the wrong conclusion - Which river are we talking about?

It may be the early bird that catches the worm but its the second mouse that gets the cheese.

Flooded rivers will often carry more junk with them - branches, trees, the accumulated junk from the riverbanks.

I'd be a bit circumspect - especially if you uncomfortable about conditions - you're supposed to be enjoying yourself!

There is a simple rule of thumb in these situtations, if YOU feel its unsafe to go then dont go, stuff what other people do. As skipper of your vessel its your call!!!

Working a river is very similar to working in a strong tidal flow. Try a bit of practice in a weir stream when there's not too much water flowing and gradually work your way up. We used to keeo the boat in commission all the year round on the Thames and never had a problem. One piece of advice. Listen to the lock keepers.

What do you mean the sea gull in front's walking !!!

Looking at your user profile it looks like you might be talking about thr Trent
Iam moored on the Trent and you need to keep well away from weirs also make sure you have a good anchor ready to use in an emergency.
If its only a couple of feet above normal level shoukd be ok
Keep a good lookout for floating rubbish
