Hi can any body recommend a decent flood/spot light that I can fit to my merry fisher ?
The idea is that I can light up a quite wide and long beam infront of me so as to be able to spot the pot bait markers and general sea debris when returning from fishing trips at night !!

I bought a headlight for my narrowboat a while ago with 18 LEDs. It's really bright and only cost about £25 or so. I'll see if I can find the source.
 
You might find led lamps wont get the range you are after, bearing in mind your boat is a little faster than a narrowboat.
 
Where do you intend fitting it? any place abaft the fore deck it will be useless, and throw more light back at you than in front, If your helm position has a handy opening window then that's the best place to operate from, either hard wire it or use a fag lighter socket.
 
I do have a sliding window but the light I have at the moment (which is poor) lights the cabin more from there than it lights up the water.
I have tried moving it 2m forward but, because it is just a halogen h3 bulb it's still pretty useless.
So the thinking is, by an led version and mount it on the grab rail above the anchor runner !!
Any better ideas welcomed and listened to !
 
A bit left of field, but how about a powerful rechargeable torch? Depends on how often it's needed, whether you are picking bouys out on the river or in open water, and whether you have crew spare.

Does have the advantage of flexibility.
 
back scatter occurs when the air contains water droplets of more or less any size from mist to rain. Light from the spot goes into the droplet, total internal reflection then sends the light in every direction except forward ! The brighter the light, the worse it seems to get.

So what's the answer to this problem ?
Is it to just fit the light up on the wheel house roof ?

Locating the spot away from your head reduces the problem, but that is no use if you are holding it in your hand.

On the occasion that I need to navigate at night when i think there is something to hit this is what i do. It is cheap and allows you to sweep from side to side which is more likely to show a pot etc.

I do not believe that any boat mounted "headlight" will do any good other than for navigation at very slow speed

Bear in mind 10 mph is 15 feet per second. The odds of getting a light to illuminate 15 feet in front of you ( well actually more as from the helm you wont see the first however many feet) is low, so even at 10mph your reactions would need to be amazing and a boat does not turn like a car. Full moon is a better bet I suspect.
