This weekends pontoon banter.

Even though we don't drink gin, have a sea going boat in a 10m tidal salt water marina, go out most weekends (inc winter) we still got the snipes from raggies about owning a gin palace. Mainly because weve got more than one engine over 28 hp we feel !.
Tend to think though that some of the owners we see on our travels (52ft 740hp stuck on rivers - 6 hours run annually and usually planning a big trip next weekend) perhaps deserve the label. Are they the ones who give the serious crews a bad name and the snipes because we are on the pontoons most weekends ?

Come on forum name names and locations for the 2006 MBM awards ceremony to be held 3pm Wednesday at Guiness bar Southampton Boat show in September.

I think 'sailors' beleive that they are really using the elements to enjoy there boating, using skill and knowledge to harness the wind for advantage.....I agree they do, i have respect for them.

However they therefore beleive that all we do is undock and push a lever, that we have no skill or knowledge and that we're more interested in getting there fast for the next drink !

Most sailors are not petrolheads, speed junkies or adrenalin sportsmen and as such do not understand what we enjoy.

Before i get shot down by alot of ex-sailors - I have sailed and raced dinghies, sailed larger boats etc but after all the effort to achieve 6 knots, i just wanted to open the throttles. It wasnt for me.

Each to their own, i'm sure the labels from both sides are just for fun.
I must spend 10 times the amount of time on my 24foot sportscruiser than most of the rag & sticks do.

Whats the award for. Folk that drink the most gin. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The biggest gin palace. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Most serious looking crew??

Least used boat??

Whats involved in this ceremony. Do I have to roll my pants up. Or is it a sort of boaty Aerobic dance.

Are you sure I want an award??? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

i think this is your problem - you clearly have a view of what constitutes serious; equally bad names.

just relax - try having a gin........... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I perhaps used the wrong term - 'active crews' then. After all I'm not the one being 'serious' - a light topic needs a light answer or lets get back to bilge pumps !

Ah they are just jealous! firstly have you ever been on the average yacht? hardly palacetial! and secondly they are so small they havn't got room for a bottle of Gin!
Anyway I can't stand the stuff, Actually it seems to me that Gin is mostly a womans tipple, do you think they are trying to call us all old women then? so I think I'll just admit to having a "Scotch Palace"!

HEAR HEAR. Gin - and its imbibers - yukkkkk!! - both smell like a cheap perfume. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

As to the main question, the satisfaction you get from sailing is the attainment of reaching any destination, sooner or later, having only used the power of nature. This compares with the mobo's elation at having arrived at one's intended destination, on time, without having broken anything or run too low on fuel. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Agreed - I think it was tcm who said that yachting was like sitting on a broken tilting park bench whilst having cold water thrown at you
