I am contemplating a cruise to the Azores in July.Because we can not anticipate our arrival date the crew can not book their flights home in advance. They now tell me that flights bought at the airport on the day at the end of July/ early August will be around £1500 . Are they correct? Or is this a loss of confidence in the skipper and an excuse to jump ship.

Thanks for this. In fact I did what I should have done in the first place. I rang TAP up and explained the problem and got an August price at £370. Terceira to London return.

I went out to Horta last May. The cheapest option from the West Country was Easyjet Bristol-Lisbon then TAP Lisbon-Horta. The total was under £200.

Buying a ticket at the airport is about the most expensive way of doing it. You can usually get a flexible ticket that allows the date/time of the flight to be changed assuming there is availability on the required flight.
Also, I was reading recently that some airlines do a special rate for returning sailors. I think the book may have been Pardey's Self Sufficient Sailor.
