I am looking for a 3ft length of overbraided hose to connect my Plastimo cooker to 8mm copper gas pipe using compression fittings.

I can't find such a thing with 8mm standpipes, only 5/16" - eg https://www.bes.co.uk/lpg-high-pressure-galv-braided-hose-36-x-5-16-12698

The other alternative is to use two compression to nozzle fittings and orange flexible hose - would this be better?

I think the normal approach is to assume that the olive is capable of taking up the six hundredths of a millimetre difference :)

Personally I don't like the braided hose as you cannot monitor the condition of the hose hidden inside the braiding. Some have reported failures that have caused them considerable distress. I replaced ours with orange hose, hose tails and jubilee clips.

But it is recommended in situations where there is a possibility of abrasion such as in a gimballed installation. It is made for that specific reason.

I fitted the wrap around spring type device to protect against abrasion.

Braided hose isnt a requirement & as has been said, it cant be inspected.

Could be a slight problem with that thinking. Plastimo installation instructions for our cooker specify braided hose, I think because when the cooker swings hoses can be against a hot cooker back panel, as is the case with ours. Not to install as specified could give insurers a reason to reject a claim if a failed hose started a fire. Braided ones like unbraided should be changed at specified intervals. Plastimo 2000 connection is 5/16" and 8mm olives are fine.

Now that is the sort of comprehensive answer I was looking for. Thank you kind sir.

Braided hose isn't a requirement & as has been said, it cant be inspected.

The thinner lining of a braided hose is subject to hidden internal degradation by hydrocarbon contaminants in LPG gas. These contaminants can be present in LPG from 10-15 PPM and can be of any Hydrocarbon eg petrol, kero. oil etc causing the thin lining of the braided hose to fall apart. The fact it is hidden inside a non gas proof braiding makes it a higher risk that I prefer not to take.

Does the recommended 5 year replacement cycle for a braided hose minimise that risk?
How many owners stick to it anyhow?

The heat from any cooker is going to be transmitted through the steel braiding to the thinner rubber lining nearly just as much as if using an orange rubber tube! . Heat and UV are two of the major factors in rubber going hard, brittle and cracking. Can you visually check for this without removing the braiding?

To meet the standards no cooking appliance should have a metal surface that should be more than 45c above ambient.
Over braid hose is rated up to 80c slightly higher than orange tube at 60c.

On balance the ability to check the orange rubber supply tube gives me greater confidence in its current condition.....

Do they only have a 5 year life? I fitted a braided hose to my cooker several years ago when I discovered the original rubber hose was over 20 yrs old! I did fit a label on with the fitted date though - I'll have to check how old it is when next on board.
