Fletcher Panther / Mercruiser

I agree the Alpha drive is very robust as long as its looked after, make sure you use high performance gear oil, standard ratio for 1.7 is 2:1 and running a 21" blackmax.

When repairing skegs is not to fit anything made from stainless steel Mercruiser do a replacement skeg P/No: 90185A1

My skegs were repaired like my props, filling in the missing alu bits and cleaning up like new.

Are your comments intended to apply to the entire D1.7 mercruiser engine.
My problems have never been at the engine levvel per se. It is the mechanism outside the boat which has caused all my grief. I mean all the Z- part oof the drive; or all or the engine outside the hull .
Do they ,for example give particular probs with the turbo unit ?

Hi

the turbo's are famous for not working and it is a well known fault that will set you back 800 for a 2nd hand one ( i.e. get it working and sell quickly) or 2200 for a new one plus fitting.:(

good luck and I am glad its not my engine.

Hi there- I spotted your post and had a question if you had a moment to reply.
Did you get rid of your panther 19sc and if so when- the reason I ask is I'm looking at one in Athlone at the moment- fully aware of issues and having engine surveyed later in the week. I have a feeling this boat may be your former one- if it is I'd like to establish what you actually repaired/replaced and what may be outstanding...

I'd really appreciate any assistance -

Very many thanks

Andrew

Fletcher panther 19c

my problems were finally sorted.]the wrong gearing mechanish had been installed when I replaced the new ''leg''
this prevented the turbo from ''clicking in''
now she takes off as she should from about 10 knts/hr up to 36 kph in 10-12 secs

I sorted it all after much ado. the wrong gearing ratio had been supplied to my engineer when installing a new leg therefore she couldn't get up sufficient revs to take off
now running perfectly-new leg mechanism- the correct one installed. there was no proob with the turbo-!!

Thanks . I got it all sorted in the end
it was due to the wrong leg mechanism installed on replacement
Turbo working fine now -
All well thank you

i'm not sure that Fletcher and Panther were together in the 19 sc.
my probs were eventually sorted by going directly to Cummins Mercruiser in UK
V helpful , and sorted all my probs

I don't know where I got the impression that f]Fletcher and PTHER WERE ASSOCIATED
BUT THE ENGINE IS MERCRUISER .
AND IF YOU DEAL DIRECTLY WITH MERCRUISER DEALERS AS I EVENTUALL DID YOU WONT GO WRONG
I DEALT WITH CUMMINS , MERCRUISER UK
THEY SPOTTED MY PROBS AND RECTIFIED THEM EASILY -OVER THE PHONE

SHE IS GOING FIME NOW
THANKS ALL FOR YOUR HELP

George, great to hear that your issues are now resolved. I too got good support from Cummins, when they were in partnership with Mercruiser. They are now separated though. I have just sold my boat but was very happy with the engine/outdrives combo. I kept a close eye on the maintenance schedule, turbos like clean oil, and had the drives serviced every 2 years. I don't think there is a fundamental design problem with the engine/drive combo, but maintenance is vey important. Not expensive either.

Hi Andrew
Sorry , didn't see your query until now.
In all probability the boat youre looking at was mine
My basic problem was that I didn't deal directly with the right people . as a consequence , when the leg was replaced , the wrong gearing ratio was insertrd in the new leg.
This then prevented the turbo charger unit to click in and so she was slow to give ''lift off''
THis has now been rectified ,
The reason I sold the boat. ?
I wanted something a bit ligger and bought a Regal 2565,
THe boat youre looking at would be hard to beaat for economy. It is incredibly fuel efficient ..
Something like 1o Litres per hour at 20 mph ..
You'll travel 20 miles for € 10 ..
hard to beat that ,
Let me know if you want any further info and i'll try to assist
good luck
]George

I Have this 1.7 turbo lump in my boat its only 7 years old had loads of trouble with the turbo . Two years ago it was all re done bearings etc went out two weeks ago bang turbo gone again
sent down to turbo dynamics in devon they say they cant repair it this time they sent me pictures and i can see why the rust under the clamp is un real . they doing me good deal £597+vat but other than turbo its been good engine i think now after every use it will be getting wd40 once its cooled down and spray cooper grease on the wastegate swivel .
i do all the work my self but its not a nice job. shame these engine have this problem as they would be cracking set up .

@ Ryan
In my case the turbo probs were caused by insertion of wrong ''gear ratio 'IN SKEG. I HADNT BEEN DEALING WITH mERCRUISER parts dealer at the time
I finally did , and they sent along a new leg with the right gearing.
Since then -no probs with turbo
When I look at the layout of my new boat it seems to me the turbo is much more protected from elements. it had an asbestos-type cladding over it..
THe WD 4440 idea was suggested to me too. I would check it with mercruiser. first. Probably a good idea , but I would ask their opinion for confirmation .Best advise I can offer is to deal with the mercruiser people yourself directly. I am incapable of doing anything mechanical so you are at an immediate advantage knowing what they are talking about.
Good luck with your turbo from here on

George
