An 'amnesty' is a temporary pardon for an offence.
The police sometimes have 'gun amnesties', which theoretically permit illegally held firearms to be handed in anonymously. (Although I wouldn't trust the anonimity bit further than I could throw the Matterhorn).
The offence has already been committed by an individual if they have a gun without a licence, and not in a gun safe, so fair enough.
The police also sometimes have 'knife amnesties', which is more questionable, as carrying a knife is not automatically an offence ( unless at a demo, football match, etc). More of a PR stunt IMO.

So the word 'amnesty' in connection with flares is ludicrous, and worse, members of the general public might (will) be deliberately misled into believing that flares are weapons, they should not be available to the public, and the 'authorities' should be the only part of society to wield any form of pyros.

The perjorative language is a subtle form of passive-aggressive totalitarian brainwashing, they can pry my pyros out of my cold dead fingers because that will be the only way to get them off me.

This *******s is creeping in to the yachting press including this forum, see various 'laser flares' type threads.

Seagoing nation, hearts of oak, what was all that about?

I share many of the same feelings you demonstrate in that post, but in this case I call Hanlon's Razor.

One formulation is "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity" - a snappier version is "Cockup before conspiracy".

I suspect the real reason is that your average junior copper probably hasn't come across the word "amnesty" much, before getting involved in amnesties for illegal drugs or weapons run by his force. So to him, "amnesty" doesn't mean "pardon for an offence", it means "event where the general public bring in things that are best not in general circulation". And a flare "amnesty" does meet that *******ised definition.

amnesty international might not appreciate the *******isation of the term by over zealous coppers, a company looking to cash in and an incompetent rya who have advertised it on their website.

i have some sparklers left over from celebrating the death of a catholic, do you think they will take those?

why dont people just sell them outside football stadia?

Fair play thanks for the answer. I like 'cockup before conspiracy' but someone also said, 'any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistiguishable from malice' ... (Douglas Adams?)
