I know the continentals take a dim view of outdated flares, but what is their attitude towards no pyrotechnics.... even with electronic equivalents?

I've heard that's fine. You're at liberty not to have any pyrotechnics but, if you do, make sure they're in date.

I am involved in the establishment and running of one of the principal beacons for HM's 90th.


The Queen's Pageant Master (please be upstanding) has put it about that the use of old lifeboat flares is not appropriate.

Ho ! Ho ! Subtle fellow; he knows his Somerset. Especially as the Beeb is sending down an OB unit just for us.

As far as I know you are not obliged to buy new flares but you are advised to phone ahead to ensure there is room in their flare 'box'.

I bought some flares in Fox's a couple of years ago specifically because they were offering to take the old ones in exchange. Except once I'd bought them they said they didn't currently have any spare room in their store for my old ones, and I'd have to bring them back another time. Which I did, twice, and still they had no room and were unable to say when they would have space. The old flares are still in my shed.

I rang first to check, and I replaced mine as per Little Sister. No charge for disposal, £1 per flare otherwise

"If you collect flares from our Ipswich service station we also offer free disposal of the flares you are replacing."
