Flare disposal in France

Difficult task I am afraid, the means vary a lot locally, often there are none..

You might try:
1. The marina office: some of them organize "journee recolte fusees permiees", expired flares day, once or twice a year.
2. The SNSM station (equiv. RNLI), sometimes they accept them;
3. The local firemen,
4. Shipchandlers are more and more able to collect them, but they charge a fee (even if you buy new flares)

5. totally illegal though common: shooting them on July 14th. A good reason not to be at anchor anywhere near idiots shooting parachutes flares almost horizontally. Unfortunately it's impossible to be warned in advance of their presence.

Wait for Bastille day and join in the celebrations.
I should have known! No matter how much trouble you take not to write a silly question, someone will always come up with a silly answer!
Not a silly answer six hand held reds and three smokes were let off in the harbour we were in last year. Had anybody let off a rocket or two nobody would have been any the wiser as the fireworks were fantastic. A Semphore station was less then three cables away.

If you had ever been present at the celebrations, you would have realised that French fireworks are in a different league to our own - more like WW2 re-enactions.

I was at a village fête near Poitiers a few years back, which included a fantastic fireworks display in the evening. across a small river from the fair ground. Mid display an entire rack of fireworks fell over and continued firing into the crowd. There was a slight movement to make room for the projectiles, a bit of shoulder shrugging and that was that. Very reassuringly French.

When I handed in my very pistol ( not long after one of those mad shooting incidents) the lady police officer took the gun & said she could not take the shells .
I took the gun back & said " No prob I will go outside in the high street & let a couple off"
She snatched the lot within seconds

We attended a firework display at Port Louis. It was held outside the town ramparts on the sea front. There was a SW gale blowing. After some consultation among the organisers, the display went ahead. The spectators got showered with burning debris and choked with smoke. Nobody seemed to mind. It was all great fun.
