Flare Amnesty Eastbourne Marina 16th March2013

Definition of amnesty
noun (plural amnesties)

an official pardon for people who have been convicted of political offences:an amnesty for political prisoners
an undertaking by the authorities to take no action against specified offences during a fixed period:a month-long weapons amnesty

In what sense exactly is this happy horse **** an amnesty?

Perhaps you would prefer "free collection of flares" ..... but that might imply they were going to re-use them:)

A similar collection at Emsworth last year resulted in incredible quantities being handed in. Given the number of boxes full casually loaded into the bomb disposal van, I would not have wanted to be following it too closely down the road!

An 'amnesty' would seem to imply that there is something criminal in our possession of flares, that there is some wrongdoing.

Really?

There are numerous threads moaning that people can't dispose of their out of date pyrotechnics because they don't want to pay for the privilege or there is no free coastguard service locally and when someone (the RNLI) arrange a opportunity for free disposal all people do is complain about the way is it being done or what it is being called.

...all people do is complain about the way is it being done or what it is being called.

A poor choice of word can seriously adversely affect the message.

'Out-of-date flares disposal Eastbourne 16.03.13' would have been much more appropriate.

At the least 'Amnesty' puts me off and makes me think the participants in this scheme will be officious jobsworths. That may be unfair but it's what results from using the term.

I will carry on practising with my oldest flares when at home on 5 November.

Bomb Squad = Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit. Could be any one of the three Services, they're nothing to do with the Police but exist mainly to deal with unexploded ordnance including improvised devices put together by the those who would wish harm to others. They actually quite enjoy days out like this as a break from routine. Nothing sinister in their presence whatsoever, just they have the licences and expertise to deal with time expired pyrotechnics.

And I have no patience with those who whinge about definitions and use of words. FFS the RNLI has got together with one or other of the Armed Services to offer a free opportunity to dispose of time expired pyrotechnics at no cost to those wishing to get rid of stuff. Who cares what they call it? Equally, if you want to hang on to the stuff and have fun on 5 Nov, carry on; just don't bang on about here.....

It isn't an amnesty.

It is an opportunity to ditch out of date flares with baggage attached to it to place you in the role of wrongdoer.

I've never had a problem disposing of out of date flares anyway.

First = amnesty. Next = licensed / banned.

As I said, who cares? Its an opportunity to ditch out of date flares. If you're so petty as to care what its called, good luck to you.
