Hi all,
I have a nice little Suzuki 2.2hp which has flaking paint on the outboard leg. The engine will be living on the dinghy all summer so I'd like to sort this out before summer.

I have some zinc primer and yamaha paint spray on the shelf I can use. Is this the best way to go? Should I wet and dry the leg back to shiny metal first?

All tips gratefully received.

Hi Trev,
I would get it back to bare metal in the affected area then paint with Hammerite Special Metals primer then apply your Yamaha paint.
I dont think zinc prmer is the best for ally.
If you look at the info from marine paint manufacturers they would recommend an etch primer, primucon and trilux treatment which will cost a lot - I think the above is more appropriate for your needs

Not unusual for Suzukis, my DF6 shed most of its paint just after the warranty ran out. Best to clean off well with fine emery and use etching primer or Hammerite primer (as Halo says) before top coating.

Can you give an example of the primer you use Graham? I also have a metal drop rudder of a yacht to sort out too, so might end up killing two birds with one stone? Trev

I haven't a clue which are the good or bad makes, someone else may help on that. The one I have on the shelf at the moment is Autotek which has lasted so far 2 years on my Tohatsu leg. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/2314...1=ICEP3.0.0-L&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0

Unfortunately, can't remember the one we used to use on gliders, that was bright yellow and expensive.

Just discovered that my yacht rudder needs doing too, so trilux 33 might be the way to go on the outboard too. Should I go primocon + trilux 33, or etch primer first?! Trev
