Debate on liveaboad forum about flags...no real answer....but when we charter abroad we fly the Welsh flag along with the countrys flag...is this really allowed?
I believe that the answer is you can fly your Welsh flag as a 'house flag' but NOT as an ensign. If the vessel is qualified you fly the Red Ensign or an privilege ensign as appropriate.
House flage (from memory) are flown from an inferior position ie Port Spreader.
(Fly the courtesy ensign from the Starboard as its 'superior'...)
Yes, port spreader along with your cocktail flag and skull and crossbones! Starboard for the courtesy flag (replacing your yellow quarantine flag after clearing in). The ensign is that of the country of registration of the vessel, so if that is the flag of the country you are in then no need for the courtesy flag.
But........whilst not proper or indeed legal, flying it anywhere is almost certainly 'allowed'.
IMHO it's a minority of skippers who get more fussed over this issue than the Med authorities.
Cheers

Fine but the Welsh flag is not a recognised Ensign .... so in theory should not substitut for such.
There is no harm in flying "subordinate" to officially required - eg as a personal house flag etc.
This is like the silly b****rs who want and some do - fly the EU blue with stars ... Yuk bl****y Yuk !!
