Just bin to the other (uptight sailers whinge about flags) side and have been reading the tangled thread regarding flags. What is the problem.some folks wallow in tradition and others think its a load of not very important ,But 51 posts on flags and why do the raggies worry so much but no one else seems to consider it such a life or death matter.

And the weather for the weekend is...............

As a merchant navy cadet I spent several years obeying flag etiquette as we moved around the world and still find it a courtesy of marine life that I would hate to see disappear. Don't see it as obsessively as some of the raggies seem to tho' !

I used rebel quite a lot in my younger (and even sillier) days, but as I shall be the wrong side of sixty in a week or so; I find I look back on some of the traditional things that are no longer observed and wonder if (in years to come) folk will say it was stupid to stop doing this and that.
I was always taught that politeness costs nothing.......these days even that is considered too higher price by some!

Having stood guard at a naval cenotaph on Nov.11, and seen older ladies and gentlemen with tears in their eyes, well... it stuck with me. I try and look after our nations flag.

You sanctimonious Oldgit you! Seriously though, I don't get uptight about it and just do what I want to do in reference to flags, and it's not just us raggies!! motorboaters also like to abide by the traditions/law aswell. I find it just as easy to wear the right ensign, as it is to wear the wrong one, whats the big deal, trying to be rebels! pathetic arseholes!

oh God! I've been rumbled!! Still a Ragpotter really, with heavy bias towrds both, how's that for sittin' on the fence!

I do find there is extremities with some of there ideas though.
For instance, on SB, there is the camp that believe that anything remotely fossil fuelled should be taxed out of existance- global warming/pollution blah, blah, blah. Then there is another lot who use CO2 fire extinguishers, or butane gas cylinders, just to cool their drinks. Wot yer fink ov that Col ?

I tend towrads the enviromental end, but being an oiolfield worker thats a little difficult! Fossil fuels are what we have I'm afraid, we could burn them more efficiently, especially coal, with fluidised bed combustion etc, but its expensive to build new power stations. Nuclear? well we are just piling up pollution for the future generations to deal with. Motor cars, their easy to attack, but don't produce the highest outputs, thats industry's burden! I use as little fuel as possible, not for green purposes, for pocket purposes! But I do try and not pollute the seas as much as possible, and do try and re-cycle and dispose of things sensibly, we acn all do that quite easily. But go back to horses and carts etc, Nah! its just not possible, without reducing the earths population by 50% and whoes going to do that? We would need one hell of an epidemic or two or three conventional wars!! Although we are heading that way and nature is surely producing some very nasty viruses to screw us up! (antibiotic resistance bacteria aswell!) Bodes well for the future!! I only wish we could leave something better to our offspring, over the years I've at least tried. Remember one thing, the biggest enemy of the enviroment, is greed, plaiin and simple. Right soap box back in cupboard, back top oil well drilling!

Regarding the people who gave their lives for the freedom of this country I suspect that the finer points of who would or would not be allowed to fly certain types and when and where to fly a particular a flag was not uppermost in their thoughts.
As some American chap once said "I am all for waving the flag It is just that I like to know who is waving it and why"

As an ex-royal navy wallah I am probably even more traditional than Boatone. I also skirted round the fringes of active service and have tremendous respect for 'those that served' so I also get a bit patriotic. I am prooud of my country and like to fly the red duster when out and about.

Thats all well and good that you are happy and able to flag the flag of your choice. My whinge is that should I wish to fly any flag other than the "correct one" it is considered bad form by some.

And the weather for the weekend is...............

Can't see the harm in it really. My kids change from the red duster to a skull and cross bones when they see any official looking boat. Last time it was a PHC launch out in Poole Harbour

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!
