flag protocol for a yawl

The ensign, being the most important flag on board, must always be worn in the after part of the vessel on its own staff on the taffrail. If for any reason this is impossible it may be worn at a position 2/3rds up the leech of the mainsail in the case of single masted vessels and in similar position in two masted vessels where the aftermast is as tall or taller than the foremast. Where the aftermast is shorter than the foremast the Ensign may be worn on a staff at the mizzen masthead.

Not my words but those of OM Watts esq. in 1927!
