I would like to fly the 'Armed Forces Day' flag on Saturday/ Sunday, on our yacht. It is about 5' x 3'. Exactly where should I fly it? We may be not be putting to sea.

How about on the forestay as a "battle flag"

Ad a lanyard to the bottom of the flag, then hoist it half or two thirds of the way up the mast on the spinnaker halyard. Secure the lanyard somewhere on the foredeck.
If it were smaller I'd say treat it like a house flag on the port spreader, but 5' would look a bit silly there.

It is sometimes impractical to fly a full-size flag throughout the year - flags
can wear out quickly, especially if they are flown in adverse conditions. Bare
flagpoles are a sad sight. The pennant, or vimpel, is a solution to these problems.
The long narrow streamer-like flags are designed to be left flying day
and night. The optional single point attachment and the narrow tail reduce
wear and their length means that they can be easily repaired.
An interesting document.
I had never heard of the term 'vimpel' so I continue to learn something every day:
