Flag etiquette

Having a yawl poses the problem where to put the national ensign.
So far I have come across a number of different options as to how it 'should' be done:
1. On the stern (mizzenboom will sweep it off)
2. 2/3 up the leech of the mizzen (use mizzen mast for owners-flag if available)
3. on a pigstick at top of mizzen ( interferes with additional VHF aerial)
and there are probably more.

What is the correct way, and what is your solution?

The correct position is on the stern but, if not possible, the rule is as close to the correct position as is practical. On a yawl this is usually at the top of the mizzen.

Yes, claymores idea of either a new boat or sawing off the rear mast are both highly practical and very sensible. BUT another option with a yawl which is bound to be dead slow anyway and the little mast at the back won't make a fat lotof difference so best de-rig the sternmost mast, use it as a flagstaff and have an ensign TWELVE FEET HIGH. Yeehah!

Do you reckon that sailors, stuck at home on a good sailing day because the crew/wife is having her mother to tea, get bored and think to themselves "I know what, I'll start another flag etiquette argument off. Excellent ideas! Both Claymore's and yours.
Problem is, I have all my radar gear etc up the mizzenmast so where to put that aftyerwards then?
And we might be dead slow anyway as you say, but the mizzenmast provides for a nifty mizzen staysail which helps us to beat most other boats

Friends have a yawl (Hinkley Bermuda 40) - they fly their ensign from a staff at the transom. Seem to have enough room to fly a proper sized one rather than a pocket handkerchief. From memory though, because of their short WL length I think the rudder and hence the mizzen is further forward than many yawls.

Use the mizzen mast as a flag staff, and you can still use it to hoist a mizzen staysail.
