Looking for some assistance folks.
I have a new tiller extension (spin lock) that I want to use, however the tiller itself comes to a rather fine point at its tip and I am worried about drilling holes in it for the fitting that comes with the extension.
What I think I need is some sort of collar that would slide down the tiller and grasp it rather than something that goes through it.
Anybody else had similar issues and\ resolved it?

As always...thanks

Make a sturdier tiller!

Jubilee clips, gaffer tape, bits of old string........I know this is PBO, but come on where's the style and ingenuity in that?

It has to be Shug's solution. Epoxy a nicely shaped block on the top of the tiller and screw into that. The extension doesn't want to be attached to the tip of the tiller, it needs to be about 8 or 9 inches back.

A friend a few years back was racing his boat at our club . It was windy and a small boat. He was leaning well out using the tiller extension when the extension becqame detatched from the tiller. With no lifelines he fell backwards overboard still clutching the extension. He then used the extension to put his red hat on to make a flag. His crew picked him up pretty quickly, fortunately, him not wearing a life jacket. The moral of the story is make it a robust attatchment.
I would try making a clampo out of SS strap going around the tiller with clamping screw at the top. Make a tee section to sit on this bolt to take the extension base. olewill

Are we talking yacht or dinghy? If a yacht the suggestions of keeping the fitting back from the end are right, you really do want to keep a comfortable handgrip free beyond the extension fitting to use when the extension is not required.
Just check though that doing this the tiller is long enough to fold away the extension.

I have exactly the same concern - my tiller tapers to perhaps 1 inch square at the point at which I would want to attach the extension - and some of the spinlock products (and others) seem expect you to drill a half inch hole through that to fit it - no thanks!

The problem is that any other type of fitting has to be shaped to fit the tiller and that makes it difficult to mass produce

Yep exactly.

FYI 32' yacht with a laminated tiller very similar to this:

Trouble is my arms aren't long enough to make helming (and sitting out) comfortable for long stretches without an extension.
I was thinking about some sort of sleeve in s/s perhaps that might slide down the tiller and then be attached into place temporarily.
Thanks for your thoughts thus far
