Fixing a clutch to my mast

How is it mounted upside down? Look again. The internal halyard is coming out from a sheave at the bottom of the mast, so the load on the clutch is pulling downwards against the four fastenings at the top.

Carp. How on earth did I miss that? And a big apology to whoever fitted it.

I was very tired, but no alcohol or narcotics involved.

The other reason for using a moulded/cast mount between the clutch and the mast is that the clutch well have a flat base and the surface of the mast will be curved.
Think before drilling... If you drill straight (perpendicular) into the mast surface for each hole then you might find the bolts will be angled outwards and would not then fit straight through the clutch holes.

Rivnuts could work but try one out on a similarly thick panel to start with. You might find the mast wall is too thick for a standard rivnut. The expanding rivnut does not then get a good grip on the internal side of the mast wall.
