Fixed VHF - what\'s the cheapest \'entry level\' deal?

Has anyone come across mega deals on 'entry level' fixed vhf transceivers recently? I'm looking for something cheap and cheerful for a little project boat so would be grateful for any pointers. (Or offers!)

I got a Cobra F55eu(DSC) on e-bay for £50. Brand new. Nice little radio and submersible.
Not the best of the Cobra range, but certainly "entry level". Got v. good magazine reviews too. You can get them new for about 90 quid now I think.

I'm with Sailorman. You don't need DSC but lots of people are falling overthemselves to "upgrade" perfectly good VHF's fro new DSC stuff. The market place is full of good used non-DSC VHF's & not many people will buy them - so laws of economics says lots of cheap good bargains out there if you look.

Agreed, DSC isn't compulsory, however I like the reassurance that if I go over the side or, heaven forbid, knocked on the head, all my crew have to remember is "press and hold the red button". As I'm linked to GPS help may be on it's way without a conversation taking place.

I'm going through similar ... I have a perfectly good non DSC set on my boat - but now coming to terms with having DSC for safety reasons.
Trawling ebay and also online chandlers - best deals I've found are NOT ebay. Most of the online chandlers are matching or even beating ebay ... My list has reduced to 2 contenders :

Cobra at about 88 quid new

Navman 7100 at about 89 quid new.

The Navman is of course end of line as it's changed owners etc. but comparing specs and looks - I think it's my choice.

If it's non-DSC - then there are quite a number come up on ebay and in fact contrary to popular belief - there ARE new sets made - trouble is finding them ! I found an outlet other day while trawling - but being non-DSC I didn't keep note of the url.

Having gone down the path of 'upgrading' there's a barely-used Navico 6500 gathering dust here.
No reasonable offer refused.

Not for me thanks ... I have 3 fixed and 5 hand-held non DSC sets already !!

I have had a cheapy cobra for the past 3 years and it has done evrything i have asked it to do.

Ask around. I've been GIVEN three so far by DSC-upgraders, or with repairable faults. Some of the older, larger, uglier sets have no commercial value.
(apart from Sailor of course)
