Nasty. Was there no hint of a 9 in the forecast? It seems unlikely that a Severe Gale arrived with no warning.

This was our Regatta weekend at Stonehaven. Sunday was abandoned after only one race. I think we had about five boats accepting tows back to the harbour. Wind was touching 40 knots at times. I was safely ashore, watching.

I was just down the coast at Whitby boat jumble yesterday. (and that was a waste of time and petrol!)
There was a strong wind there, but not F9, more of a 6-7 at a guess.
Suppose thats a bit of a handfull in a Laser. I thought these sort of races had rescue boats on station during races - perhaps they were sort of overwhelmed.
Apparently there has been a fatality, one of the "judges" I believe.
Very sad.
