Did they still have those bubble-traps then? We used to have visions of the boat sinking due to lack of buoyancy. I think we used to get some loss of steering function when passing through.
 
There are no bubble traps any more. For conservation reasons, the Hellevoetsluis dam is allowed to sluice water through, making the Harringvliet and Hollandsch Diep partly tidal (about 30 cm) and brackish.

we came through there soon after the St Phillipsland dam was finished with our very own swarm of flies, we had planned to anchor but got out pdq into salt water
