I’m going on the beach this week-end to fit a new depth transducer. The old one is just laminated through the hull, new one is a Raymarine removable job. What do I use on the transducer tube through the hull silicone or sikaflex?
Thanks

Asit is (I assume) the two bolt bronze fitting I personally would use neither as the first will eventually fail, possibly sooner than you'd like, and the second may well preclude you ever getting it off again, I would use the window type bedding mastic strips also used for other through hull fittings, deck fittings etc, sold in 25mm and 50mm wide strips and obtainable from most caravan supplies. It is stiff, sticky, non-setting, can be easily moulded or cut to shap, resilient and bolts down nicely. As an added bonus, its cheap too.

See here for example: http://www.chandleryworld.co.uk/acatalog/SealantsFillers.html

You'll only want about 150mm of 25mm, if you are near Sandhurst or Weybridge tomorrow I'll give you some F.O.C., pm me or e-mail if you want it.

Not bronze but plastic and it's going through a 1" foam sandwich and 1" backing laminate. I'm doing it between tides so the job has to be right first time. Thanks for the offer but I'm oop north. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Personally I would use Sikaflex, coating it generously where it goes through the sandwich hull (I assume) in order to minimise the risk of water getting into the foam area. It would be better to epoxy the hole suface to seal it, but you haven't time for that on the beach. There is a small long-term risk of the sikaflex affecting the plastic of the thru-hull and silicone is usually recommended for that reason. Keep a wooden plug next to it if worried about that?

I'd second using Sikaflex and also recommend putting some around the inside of the tube once fitted before screwing down the securing nut. We launched last year and then had to bail out due to a leak until we could dry out and refit. The sling of the crane has dislodged the through hull fitting - not pleasant. Don't be economical with the Sikaflex
