I have a lovely old Trident 24, to which I am considering fitting a roller furling jib. Can anyone please say if it’s possible to do this with the mast still up? I’m reluctant to drop it, and re-tension afterwards!

You should have a look at an Alado furler - one of its features is that you fit it with the mast up. It's also cheaper than pretty much any other furler. Good service, even tho the company is based in Brazil.

Welcome.

Depends on the type, but the basic Plastimo 609 which is probably the most appropriate (and economical!) can. Information and fitting instructions here plastimo.com/en/deck-equipment-rigging-hardware/plastimo-jib-reefing/enrouleur-609-bateaux-6-9-m-9116.html

You will need to have your ail modified at least or a new sail. Worth talking to a sailmaker as they often do packages of furler and new sail.
Thanks for that, Tranona - I’ll definitely look into this!

That’s very interesting, Aeolus, I’ve definitely got to follow up that lead - thank you very much indeed!

I'll second that. We have Alado furlers on our yankee and staysail. Simple, robust and they work well.

On your re-tensioning afterwards. The furler fits over the forestay, so it has to de-tensioned to sleeve it on, then re-tensioned .

I fitted a new Plastimo furler to my Snapdragon with the mast up. You'll need a halliard to replace the forestay while you're fiddling around, with it disconnected and you'll most likely need to slacken the backstay right off as well, but it was pretty straightforward,
