Thinking of fitting gas cylinder before the season starts, what are the regs, I have a pandora 700, there is a locker on the port side of the cockpit, under the benching, no top access but could vent through the door, is this allowed, what other equipment would I require, shouldn't be that expensive? Thanks for your replies.

Weigh this up:

You don't have to meet any particular regulations unless you go on inland waterways but you would be wise to be aware of the issues.

Fitting a suitable locker would be very difficult on your boat, meeting the full recommendations, almost impossible.

In your place I would think about siting a portable hob, possibly using canister gas. For years I used a simple Trangia, meths is a pretty safe fuel.

There are only really regulations for inland waterways, but these are sensible and worth following. See here for guidance, skip to section 7 - http://www.boatsafetyscheme.org/media/194782/2013ecp_private%20_boats_ed3_public_final.pdf

For the full details required for a gas installation see chapter 7 of the complete B.S.S. Essential guide here http://www.boatsafetyscheme.org/media/180428/bss guide 2005 complete web.pdf

This is where you will find all the nitty gritty stuff .. the detailed information you need to install LPG.

Designing, locating and venting a suitable gas bottle locker is probably the biggest problem in a small boat. Its an expensive option from gas purchase point of view but consider the smaller Camping gaz 904 cylinder which it less tall than the usual 907.

Not so much of "The Only", when i started i could have never been able to afford a Pandora. i did have a Prelude as my second boat after selling a Silhouette 11

I have never been able to afford anything as grand as a Pandora !

I know the previous owner had a gas bottle lashed to the stern end of the boat, but was advised to remove it by a surveyor, I have a small portable cooker, but was interested in your many thoughts, I have seen cookers that have full height back, and side panels but none that are portable, do you line the apeture sides and back in some type of none inflammable material ie metal sheet, to protect from fire, also a upstand at the front to keep it from slipping out into the cabin, even with the portable cookers you would think there would be installation guide lines?

In reply to VicS reply, Pandora's are very cheap, but offer a lot, well built, not a lot of space but planed out well. Easy to maintained, could write a small book on what I have done to mine. Any way that's for another time, I will use some Aluminum sheet to line my cooker opening

My marina neighbour & forumite is Gas Safe (LPG) reg his 3.7kg propane bottle is lashed to his stern rail. i would assume he is more competent on gas that your surveyor

Common practice but the BSS dont like it when they are lashed to the transom where they can get bashed in locks . On a stern deck where any leakage will drain overboard is acceptable ... but not practical on a Pandora I guess

My cooker space is lined with aluminium ... trouble now is finding a decent cooker, esp one with flame failure devices on all burners, to fit the space. Ended up with a cheap camping cooker minus a few bits and pieces. Need to fit a gas alarm ( in lieu of flame failure devices ) and find/make some new pan clamps to complete the job
