I am trying to refit a piece of the helical reinforced green suction pipe commonly found on toilets. It's REALLY tight and I can't get it over the spigot on the toilet. I've tried greasing it and heating the end in hot water but neither seem to be working and I am now getting short of skin on my knuckles...

Has anyone any suggestions. The pipe is a few years old and I have trimmed a couple of inches off the end. Does this pipe lose elasticity with age? It's on the suction side (SL400 toilet) so it need reinforcing, is reinforced rubber piping generally easier to fit? Any suggestions very appreciated.

It sure does - if a hairdryer/hot air gun won't do it - buy some new hose.
 
You have my sympathies, I had the same problems with white sanitation hose. I think hoses in general do go hard with age, I've replaced some with new because I couldn't get the old stuff back onto a spigot. Also some hoses are not as good as others.

You seem to have most of the techniques. I found that with a metal fitting (e.g. seacock) you have to heat the fitting with a hot air gun as well. You can try and enlarge the pipe by heating it in hot water then jamming it over a wine bottle that's full of hot water as well. Fairy liquid is the lubricant I used, I ended up getting the pipe half on and reheating the lot with a hot air gun again. You have to be careful not to collapse the piping.

Good luck, you'll need it, not to mention some new skin for your knuckles.
 
Unofficial advice

Every boatyard I know uses fairy liquid, a hot air gun and a tapered softwood plug for stubborn cases.

BUT this is CONTRARY to the official advice, as you can easily collapse the hose, if you get carried away.
 
I am pretty sure that you do not want to be refitting the green hose, but rather replacing it with the correct grade white sanitary hose if on the discharge side. The green hose is permeable and can allow smells into the boat as it degrades.
 
K.Y. Jelly. Plunge end of pipe into mug of BOILING water for a few minutes, having first threaded a pair of jubilee clips up the pipe. Liberally smear toilet spigot in the jelly and then ram on the pipe,working it up to required position.
I actually had to mark the correct spigot position on the pipe in pencil, then remove the spigot from the toilet, carry out all above with pipe pulled out into a space in which I could work, then refit spigot CAREFULLY. Some more boiling water on the pipe before final tightening up to remove stress from final curve helped.

Seriously,It`s been discussed before in the forum,generally bcause of its admirable properties,and that it`s harmless to the materials involved.

Actually, 'twas recommended to me years ago. As Pete said, it's an outstanding hose lubricant--beats the socks off dishwashing liquid (which is the industry recommended hose lubricant)...water soluble, so it dries out instead of remaining permanently greasy...non-harmful to rubber...non-toxic, so it can be used in potable water connections too...and non-corrosive. I tried it, and makes putting fittings on hoses so much easier that I haven't used anything else since.
 
I remove my pipes from the boat every winter for a good clean out, yes it was a struggle refitting the pipes the first year, ended up heating the pipe in boiling water,hammered a round soft wood bung into the end of pipe, allowed pipe to go cold, removed bung.
Now refitting every year just requires a drop of lubricant on the pipe and it pushes on.
 
Thanks for all the advice. Got the pipe on last weekend, using washing up liquid boiling water and some wooden bungs. A useful lesson learnt!
