Hi - I'm planning to fit a bulkhead steering compass (Plastimo Contest) about 1 inch from a NASA Target Electronic Depth display. It doesnt seem that there is any 'magnetic' interference. Unfortunately this is the logical place for the compass. Do folks thing I'm likely to get any problems?

Cheers

There is no mention of any safe distance for a compass from the Nasa depth display in any of the literature available on line so why not contact Nasa.

The matching Nasa compass with remote fluxgate unit would solve any problems.

See if it deviates your handbearing compass in the same spot .If not I cant see it being a problem.

without being pedantic, or maybe I am,,
Try the hand bearing compass on different headings, as deviation could be zero on opposite headings, and high on adjacent headings. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I am sure I read in the instruction manual for my nasa clipper depth unit that it should be fitted a metre from any compass, but I will double check it and get back with an answer.

I did not see anything but I may have missed it. Look for yourselves.

If there is nothing in there it's worth a phone call IMHO just the confirm that there is no problem

I have fitted a NASA depth/log within 6 inches of my compass and haven't noticed any problems. To be honest I didn't even think about it until I read a similar post in this forum.
Of course, you've got me worried now, so if you get any contrary advice I'd be grateful if you'd post it here.
