you're not really measuring AIR temp with the prob this way, you're measuring casing temp, so yes whole turbo is rather warm outside even on the intake side :D

regarding probes.

You DONT want something like that:

tried them, wont secure and become air/pressure tight in our application, once you try a bit harder it breaks appart, too flimpsy, AVOID!

but you do want something like this:

strong, thicker, with a proper compression bronze ring/olive in the middle to create a tight seal.
Both work with various boards MAX6675 or MAX31855 on an arduino (or clone) and give more than decent accuracy.
I feel they will work with the kit you bought, actually I do have an IKEA digital food temp thing, I'll try to connect it and see if the values match (at home using a lighter that is not on the boat!)
I have them now on my exhaust elbows and I've stopped matching load using engine revs, I'm now using EGT temps instead :p

Amazingly........the adapter bolts I used for the tyre pressure boost gauges setup are for 1/8npt tyre valves. Vas probes....1/8npt.

Perfect spot for measuring intake temp too....just before it goes in the intake valves :)

btw, doesn't your Volvos already measure compressed air temp? even my plain analogue IVECOs have probs there (although granted they don't output that on a gauge, I think it's one that goes to a warning light or the annoying beeping thing)

combination isn't it, if it was just casing temp = water cooled, the outside of the turbo outflow is not going to be over 85C or so.

technically it is, but consider air temp would probably be at around 70C, exhaust casing at 300-400C or even more on the plane and coolant being 80C odd, it is complicated. Don't forget that even the bits that are not watercooled (the bearing/shaft area at the middle between the alloy and cast parts) is doing one gazzilion rpm and it heats up nicely as well...

taking the external temp b4 the intercooler we may get to some agreement of an acceptable temperature, and earlier warning of worn out air filters or worse

think we need a new thread on just this, external temp b4 intercooler / engine revs / KAD version etc
