Fitting car radio

Can anyone help? I am planning to fit a car radio. After cutting out the correct size aperture in the ply fascia, the sleeve is inserted to take the radio. What I am not sure of, is what stops the radio and sleeve from moving side to side or up and down? Should I install a platform for this to sit on? Thanks Bob

the normal method is to bend out the tapered flaps cut into the frame, so that they pull the lip on the front hard up against the edge of the appature. bend out as many as possible.

however, when I put mine in, I fixed two bits of ply to the inside of the hole, so that they were running along the sides of the unit; then drilled through so that I could bolt the unit in to the threaded holes in the unit (this seems to be a standard feature) - I don;t like those steel things, especially on boats...

Different models have different fitting methods, but the radio generally has a support strap or support bracket on the rear face. The fitting instructions should explain this.

Yes that's correct. All car radios to my knowledge ar esupplied with a short (adjustable) steel strap that is fixed to a point, usually above the rear of the radio, and then through bolted with the bolt supplied to the fixing point on the rear of the radio.

As pvb says, the fitting instructions should clearly show this.

PS You probably know this but.......... Most modern radios have the cables nicely terminated in smart plugs for your Nissan or whatever. In most car radio shops you can buy the mating sockets with wires attached so that you can link up neatly to the boat electrics
