I am planning to fit to new Antal 30 self tailing winches to the cockpit coaming on my Achilles 840. They will be about 12 inches above the level of the deck and bolted through the level coaming top.

I am interested in advice on support under the winch, alignment of the self tailing 'bit' with the cockpit, and feed angle of the sheet to the winch i.e. will I need to put in some angle base supports.

TIA

Just fitted my ST winches - location was already strengthened by built in pad of approx 14mm ply. would suggest that your location will also need a similar pad, dimensions would depend on how well deck is supported - if a large area of unsupported deck, then a large pad would be needed, if in a small section supported on each side, then a small pad is sufficient! The angle of the tail will again depend on your boat. I placed mine with the tail pointing directly aft, cause that is where I wanted the rope to go, you may wish yours pointing into the boat, but 3/4 aft depending on where you want the rope to fall as it comes off the winch, and so you cant catch it and accidently free it from the winch.
