Fitting an inboard into a clinker work boat

Hi everyone,

I have a small clinker built work boat, and I'd like to fit a small inboard. Has anyone any experience of doing this, and can anyone offer any guidance? The prop would have to exit via the base of the transom, with a suitably fashioned rudder.

Been there, done that thing; 1GM10 into 16ft clinker ex-RNLI boarding boat.

You will almost certainly need to add a false keel to get enough depth for the sterngear. This will increase the draft significantly. Boats built for power have a different shape aft. Keep the draft forward as little as possible, for beaching. Bore for the shaft straight through the keel/hog - you will be putting ample strength back.

You need to get the prop under the hull, not aft of it, otherwise it will cavitate and your steering will be too poor for a reliable workboat.

Add several substantial wood floors. Make the arms as long as possible.

It is impossible to make the bearers too long or too substantial.

Add side benches aft. "Foresheets" are handy too. It may be best to arrange the single lever controls to starboard aft rather than on the engine box (where you may not reach them, singlehanded). Fuel tank can go under a thwart.

Tiller wants to come at a comfortable height for standing as well as sitting.

I found four large cleats screwed to the inside face of the gunwale, with a warp rove through a hole in the middle of the cleat and a stopper knot undeer the hole, the handiest way for securing alongside.
