Hi folks,

Our boat came without a windlass so i want one fitted.

There's nowt in the locker to fit it to and i dont want it on the deck.

Will a 'fibreglass bloke' be able to build in a shelf or is there something i can buy and have fitted?

Appreciate any help,

Cheers

Andy

Best solution would be to look for any other Bavaria 33's in the area and ask to take a look.
There may be others on these forums who have a Bavaria 33 and can post photos.

My windlass was mounted on a shelf at the aft end of the locker, the chain fell on the sloping rear face an piled up very quickly and jammed, I also found that the chain did not have enough weight to pull itself down away from the vertical axis drum.
My solution was to laminate two pieces of exterior ply bolt them to the shelf and fix the windlass to the end, projecting if about 1ft worward, works a treat. I reconn you could build a ply shelf and fix it to blocks attached to anchor locker sides then mount the windlass on the ply shelf, 2 layers of 18mm should do the job.

I've just done a similar thing on my Benne 38' . I used an aluminium plate 12mm thick to move the windlass forward. Under the plate there is a stainless frame that goes back to the bottom side of the shelf in the locker to add the required stiffness. Without it the whole windlass bounces up and down.

Because the deck slopes down at the bow the inside of the locker lid needed modifying and the whole lid was lifted 25mm. ( iroko strips in the photo ) this actually bought it more in to line with the rest of the deck rather than being stepped down so I am very happy with the result. BTW the windlass has been painted white now and looks the dogs b*****s

The Bavaria platform is a substantial moulding bonded to the hull sides and the forward bulkhead. You will need to replicate that. Don't think you can buy the moulding. We ordered our boat with the windlass because the cost fitted was little more than buying the bits - and they left out the platform if you did not order it!

Speak to Clipper Marine. They will know somebody who has retrofitted a platform.
