Can some kind soul advise me on a good configuration for my 'Norman 20'. I want to go on an extended trip thru the European Waterways/med, and would like an economic diesel power source, coupled to a sterndrive, which will give 12 knots app.
I would also appreciate any advice on actually fitting everything together around the transom.
Thanks a lot,
Den Moran

Your undertaking sounds some what over ambitious to me. However have you considered adding a diesel outboard. Which would seem to me. A lot less bother.

sorry Haydyn, didnt see the next bit!
My route will be
Swansea to Bristol
Bristol-London
London - N.France ( havent decided entry point yet!)
Strasbourg via Paris
Rhine-Main
Main-Danube-Black Sea
Med-Rhone
Home
So you see my problem vis-a-vis longevity and reliability,as well as economy!!
Thanks again,

<font color=blue> If I have got my boats right and you have the aft cockpit version (not the Conquest with an aft cabin), then the reccommended sizes were as follows:
Inland waterways 5 - 10 hp
River/Estuary 20-45 hp
Coastal 45-80hp
I suspect however that those engine sizes are based on outboards. They did build a few with inboards and there is no reason why you shouldn't put an inboard in. To get the right HP however you would need speak to someone like Mike Bellamy of Lancing Marine he will not only guide you I bet he can supply you with the best unit.

Have you concidered the fact that such a boat might just disapear enroute, never to be seen again. And how you going to sail Bristol to London. Canal no doubt. Dont you think you need something a bit more subsantial for your task??

There is a Norman boat owners club website that has relatively recently come into being. Something like www.normanboat.co.uk but I suggest you Google for it. The site, which I read occasionally, having had a Conquest for a while, is a mine of information on all things Norman, even if there are some people who think that salt water is the preserve of the very rich.

An OMC 120HP petrol inboard was an option for the 20, just live with the space and fuel use! But yes, contact Lancing, they will advise. IMO diesel outobards are dreadfully pricey and like peacock egss S/H.
