Fitting a Rev counter to 2001B

I am trying to fit a rev counter (Ebay) to my 2001B with a Bosch alternator. The rev counter has a pos and neg feed and a single wire for the alternator connection. The instrument panel has 4 way connector for the rev counter, which are pos and neg supply and two other wires, one of which goes to the W terminal on the alternator. Connecting the rev counter alternator connection to either of the other wires on the connector has no effect, it still does not work
Any one else had this problem??

Is it possible that one set of Pos/neg is for Instrument lights? and you need additional pos input for Rev counter to operate?...just a thought! HTH

Are you sure that your rev counter is supposed to be alternator-driven? I understand that some Volvo rev counters need a special pick-up on the engine.

The wiring diagram is on the Motoren site

You will have to click on Volvo-Penta, and then on to manuals from other sites, and follow from there.

It shows the +/-, the W terminal, but no connection to the other wire.

is it a tacho from alternator or a pulse from a flywheel sensor?

It is a pattern part (ie not orignal volvo), and supposed to be alternator sensing. Don't think I have a flywheel sensor on my engine, as it is an old engine from the why worry school of thought - only oil pressure, temp and charging warning lights! will go to the boat next weekend and have another fiddle
